Welcome to Class 1! I hope you have all had a fantastic summer! Class 1 are settling in really well; they all seem a very happy and confident little bunch. I am enjoying their company and I’m loving hearing about their holiday antics.

We have 3 new members of our class! So a big, warm welcome to Oliver, Cameron and Tommy!

Now that we have ‘first-day-back worries’ out of the window, please encourage your child to come into class independently so they can get on with putting their things away and doing their morning activities.

In Class 1 this term, we will very much be building upon the EYFS teaching and learning to ensure the children have a smooth and enjoyable transition. The children will continue to learn through play based activities and experiences and will have familiar zones around their new classroom. Later in the year, the learning will become more informal whilst maintaining an element of play, practical learning and still lots of fun!

In Class 1, we have 3 members of staff. I am the class teacher- Miss Bratt, Mrs Sprosen will be covering my PPA on Tuesday afternoons and a familiar face, Mr Barnes is our class teaching assistant.

This year, we are starting with a whole school topic based on the ‘take one picture’. For two weeks, our topic and learning will be based around the picture shown below.

Throughout these 2 weeks I will also be assessing the children through playing Maths and phonics games. More information will be posted about reading, phonics and home learning etc after these initial 2 weeks. Our priority is to make sure Class 1 are happy and settled in their new classroom with their new teachers.

Following our take 1 picture topic, we will begin our next topic ‘Confessions of a Chocoholic’ which we will share with Year 2. There is always plenty of room for the children to steer their own learning and we will continue to follow their interests and link in the relative learning objectives.

Little reminders…

  • PE kits and welly boots to be kept in school at all times.
  • Swim kits needed for our Tuesday afternoon swimming session.
  • Children are only allowed water in their water-bottles.
  • Our other PE session is on a Thursday

Y1 overview

Reading

I am currently listening to the children read individually to assess where they are at. By the end of next week, all children will have a new set of books and their reading record returned.

Reading books will continue to be changed weekly and I will leave a comment when I have read with your child. Your comments are so useful and lovely to read, however do not feel you must comment every time you read with your child. Please ensure you are reading with your child at home as often as you can. Every day is perfect but a minimum of 3 times per week.

Little reminders…

  • Children need a pair of welly boots kept on their pegs for any outdoor learning.
  • PE kits clearly labelled with your child’s name.
  • Swimming kit (Tuesday).
  • Water bottles to keep in the classroom- water only in the classroom.
  • A book-bag they can store in their classroom draw.
  • WOW vouchers will continue. I will send them home in book-bags next week.

As always, if you have any worries or concerns, please do not hesitate to come and speak to either myself, Mr Barnes or Mrs Sprosen.

Miss Bratt :)

Phonics Home work

Phonics home work will be set on a Tuesday and is to be handed in the following Monday.

The home work will differ as to whether your child is following the EYFS curriculum or the National Curriculum.

All children will have a green phonics homework book regardless.

National Curriculum Children

If your child follows the National Curriculum, they will have a second pirate themed book where they will practise given tricky words and common exception words.

EYFS Children

If your child follows the EYFS, they will have lists of tricky words put in the back of their phonics books to practise at home, as and when they are taught in school. Within the next 2 weeks, word strips will be popped into book bags for children to practise their blending skills for reading. Please record when you practise these on the sheet in the back of your childs reading record.
